Ranked #21 of America's Top 100
Public Courses
The Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes has once again mastered
Golf Digest's Top 100 list. For the second time in the course's
short history, The Harvester was included on the magazine's
list of "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses,"
as indicated in the May
2005 issue.
Golf Digest, the revered periodical of the sport, ranked
The Harvester at 21, up from the 38th spot awarded in 2003,
and above famed Cog Hill (#23, Lemont, IL) and Torrey Pines
(#89, La Jolla, CA). And, as in years past, The Harvester
is the only course in Iowa to be included on the prestigious
list.
According to the magazine, Golf Digest has conducted America's
100 Greatest Golf Courses rankings since 1966, making it
the oldest and most respected rankings in the game.
Golf courses selected for these honors are judged on several
factors, including ambience - evaluated by Golf Digest critics
by asking, "How well does the overall feel and atmosphere
of the course reflect or uphold the traditional values of
the game?"
Owner/Developer Dickson Jensen agrees The Harvester fits
the criteria of ambience. "Compared to some of the
most famous courses in the world, we recognize that The
Harvester is young," said Jensen. "But the course
design, the surroundings, the commitment to tradition and
the game of golf
it all lends to a maturity and a
degree of excellence beyond our years."
The Golf Digest list marks the second major ranking for
The Harvester in the past month. The Harvester was also
honored by Golfweek as the 55th Best Modern Golf Course
in the U.S. (Public or Private). The Golfweek
list was compiled by a nationwide team surveying 2000
nominated courses and judging each on 10 standards of evaluation.
"To be ranked so high among some of the nation's most
famous and preeminent courses - above courses like Deere
Run (#56, Silvis, IL), Kapalua GC (#74, Kapalua, HI), Bay
Hill Club (#77, Orlando, FL) and The General at Eagle Ridge
(#92, Galena, IL) - is amazing for a course in Iowa,"
said Patrick Kilbride, PGA Head Golf Professional at The
Harvester. "Iowa has a hidden gem for golf in the U.S.
that is available for anyone to play whenever they wish.
Golfers don't have to fly, rent a car, or pay for lodging
if they live within driving distance of Des Moines. This
is a tremendous feather in The Harvester's cap and will
only help promote the wonderful golf that Iowa is fortunate
to have."
While many of the nation's best courses are inaccessible
due to private club membership status, The Harvester remains
open to the public. Click here
